With reference to the appointment of Mr. Clifton to perform the duties of Assistant Superintendent of Police during the absence of Mr. Caldwell, I am instructed to acquaint you, that His Excellency has been pleased to order that Mr. Clifton shall receive an increase to his salary at the rate of £100 per annum, and that the Interpreters in your office who are to conduct the Chinese duties of Mr. Caldwell are to receive between them at the rate of £56 per annum.
